I agree with Jason on a lot of stuff he's posted but here I have to disagree
strongly.

First the words aren't for the one chanting them, they have power in and of
themselves. The individual isn't required to be able to understand it or to
feel it. Though if the person has more control over prana and K that energy
can be directed into the japa and it will be more powerful. Some people do
feel the energy but some don't. It is like seeing auras and the like just
because you can't see them doesn't mean you aren't advanced, perhaps farther
along than a friend who can see them. We are all just different.

Sanskrit is a holy language and has powers because of that. Those powers are
focused in the mantra and improve the likelihood of desired results. Ancient
Hebrew can be used in much the same way if one follows a few basic
constructs. You can do an English mantra, it just won't have the potential
power of one in a sacred language.

As to making up mantras, even in Sanskrit, it isn't something that anyone
should try without some training. You are dealing with directing energy and
if you don't think you can get hurt playing with energy, grab a bare
electrical wire and check out that theory. Usually with mantras you'll not
get hurt but just waste your time, but you can create real problems for
yourself or others.

For example you will want to include at least one bija mantra in your
mantra. The bija (a single word or sylable) increases the power
considerably. But if you include a Krishna bija in a devi mantra there might
be a real conflict in the energy produced. The more powerful the bija, the
greater the potential conflict. The results could be interesting to observe,
but not so much fun to live.

The best source available to most of us is Thomas Ashley-Farrand. He has
several books out, including a great 3 Vol set that is way beyond most
people's needs, and a lot of people's pocketbooks. He does have a very good
website. You can check him out and order his books, tapes, and CDs (several
books and a CD or two are available from Amazon too). The URL for his site
is: http://www.sanskritmantra.com/ You will need to poke around to get full
benefit, all pages and topics aren't linked to all pages and topics.

Someone mentioned the mantraonnet site. It is a very good site. But I find
the fact they don't transliterate the Sanskrit in many cases to be a pain to
deal with. They do have far more mantras posted online than Ashely-Farrand
so anyone looking would stand a better chance of finding a particular mantra
online there, you just may not know what it is without playing the online
recording which aren't so clear in all cases.

Namaste,

Joe
