Weighing in here.  Perhaps the problem was not in leaching minerals out of  
the body, but that the dogs weren't getting the calcium/mg balance they were  
accustomed to from their ordinary water.  Lack of a calcium/mg balance  
certainly can cause kidney stones.  Ouch!
