Laura,

According to whom?

Since it is done in some parts of the world and is socially the norm there,
as I read Osho, it would certainly be moral there by his use of the word.

To me any non-self inflected (to include others doing at the request of the
one being mutliated as in tatoos or piercings) mutlitation would be immoral,
whether done to males or females, no matter what part of the body is
mutilated. This does not include "medically necessary" procedures, as in
removing an arm from someone unable to give concent, as a part of a medical
effort to save that person's life.

There is a broad area where Osho is partially correct, some of what is often
labeled moral or immoral by some is very little of either, it is mostly
social convention. But the fact social convention exists does not mean
morality is a part of it, nor that morality is not critically important and
very real.

Morality and social convention have points of intersection and points where
they do not intersect (remember those Venn diagrams from school??). Racism
has often been the social convention, but it was never moral.

My objection was to the blanket statements I read. Mass murder is immoral!
His statements do not allow for that statement. It would seem if society as
a whole (and I'm not clear where he draws the line, >50%, >75%, ??) was OK
with it then he'd call it moral since morality is nothing but "social
conditioning" to him.

There is also the reality that some immoral acts are rather minor, like
knowingly taking a paper clip from the office for personal use (theft) and
others are just God awful, like mass murder.

Namaste,

Joe.
