Desire

Here is a quote from a book called, Working Towards Enlightenment,
The Cultivation of Practice, by Master Nan Huai-Chin

the Divas in the six heavens of desire have a longer life spnd than
we
do, and they are free from the sufferings and afflictions of this
world of ours. The rewards are very great, so it is always people
who
do good things, cultivate good practices, and do meditation work who
are born there. They are called the devas of the heavens of desire
because they are not detached from sexual desire. Although the devas
who dwell there are not detached from desire, they have sublimated
desire to a high extent, and so they can ascend to the sex heavens of
desire.

In volume 5 of 'The Yogacarabhumi Shastra', concerning the sexond of
the three stages of deliberate attention and investigation, it
says:"None of the devas of the real of desire are born from wombs.
The Devas of the heavens of the four deva-kings come forth by
transformation from the shoulders or the breasts of their parents
like
5 year old children."

In 'The Creation of the World Sutra', volume 7, part two of chapter
eight, entitled "the Thirty-Three Heaven," it records the following;
"O monks, in heaven the deva children come forth suddenly from the
knees or from between the legs of the male and female devas when they
are sitting. When they are first born, they are already l ike 12
year-old children in the world of humans. If they are deva-boys,
they
are born from the knees of the male devas as they are sitting. If
they are deva-girls, they are born between the legs of the female
devas."

As for the devas in the heavens of the realm of form, they are born
from their fathers: the tops of the fathers' heads splits open, and
they come forth. All the devas ahve a crown of flowers on top of
thier heads. Before they die, the crown of flowers first withers.
At
this time the male and female devas all weep: this deva will soon
die, and will have to descend into lower realms. When devas reach
the
lower realms, they change into humans like us. And yet we humans
still think we are so great!
