I said *some* circles. I've never been to Burning Man, but
with it being such a big event (thousands, I hear), we get
participants stopping by the book store before and after
the trek to Nevada. I've noticed all kinds, but as with
any regular gathering or movement, as it gets stylized
there are some who want to have one over on others.
They loose their kindness, simplicity and humility. These
are just a handful, but they stick out more. Everybody
else I know who goes to the festival are very down to
earth people (mostly 10 to 20 years younger than me).

I have sort of a block about the event because a dear
friend who died of cancer (she was just 32) tried to
start a burning man gathering in LA in 1984. Aside form
the idea being a little too for out for the time, she was
unable to legally secure a big enough space in the city
to burn such a large effigy.

So whenever I see videos of the Nevada event I think,
"hey! that was Martha's idea! Those young upstarts!
What do they think they're doing?"

I'm very familiar with the desert. I had my
awakening (slash) k psychosis there. From
ancient petroglyphs to Area 51, the terrain
seems deceptively quiet, but is full of power.

My apologies if it sounded like I was
judging. I'm actually kind of jealous. I've
turned into kind of a home body these past
few years and sometimes I wish I had the
youthful abandon to run naked (literally)
through the sand and sagebrush in some
esoteric 21st century ritual.

Have fun for me.

Love,

Paul
