Wow. I just got back from San Diego and was thinking
of the museum when your post came in.

A new exhibit was there that was truly frightening.
It was of torture and execution devices used in
Europe in the middle ages... many used by the
Catholic church. These weren't reproductions, they
were the actual equipment (with the exception of the
iron maiden which the original was destroyed in the
Dresden bombings and a duplicate was recast from
its fragments).

I had no idea how barbaric the human race could
be. Some state and church sanctified methods of torture
made the rack and thumb screw look like child's play.
They were so ghastly and horrific it would be inappropriate
to describe them on this list.

But there is one thing that haunts me: There was a metal
impaling spike (looked like it was made of iron... not
sure) that was vibrating when I touched it (there were no
security guards present at the time... so I took liberties).
My girl friend felt the same thing. We felt the floor and
wooden base it was bolted to (it was about six feet tall)
and nothing else was vibrating... only the pole itself which
stood like a lightening rod in the middle of the exhibit hall.

Needless to say, we both got the creeps.

We made our exit to the sunny, tree lined expanses of Balboa
Park, but I'll never forget that exhibit. It was very thought
provoking (most of the tortures were carried out on
women). Most memorable was a crucifix that cleverly
concealed a dagger.

So we've come a long way since the Inquisition, but
how far, really, have we gone?

I feel like I have my own house in order. I've cleared a
lot of muck from my mind and body.... had a big
rummage sale. But I can still see that nightmarish iron spike,
the antithesis of tolerance and compassion, standing like
an obsolete nuclear missile.... unthinkable, but always in
the poised and ready position.

And the damn thing is humming with energy.... literary.
I'm not making this up. I don't know what kind... if it's
good or bad.... if it's strange ju ju or just neutral earth
energy from it's shape and geographic location, but
the vibration is real.

Just thought I'd send this post card.

PS.

San Diego was lovely.

Wish you all could of been with us.

Paul
