Hi, Lillian,

For me loving unconditionally is to let someone be
without
asking/wanted/wishing for change in that person.
Acceptance of where they
are and what they feel and what they do. I want to
clarify that, though, and
say that it transcends the part of you that encourages
or supports positive
behavior and the part that condemns negative behavior.
It transcends that
whole realm of dichotomy. It's also something that can
occur spontaneously,
but is impossible to force. It also starts with
oneself. If you are caught
up in your own fears, desires, patterns, that gets in
the way. I believe
that our lives are about learning how to clear all
that out of the way. It
doesn't mean you have to be with someone if you love
them unconditionally.
You set them free by granting them their freedom from
your judgment.

A friend of mine has a waterfall that burns, called a
firefall. (If anyone
is interested, I can send you a link to her website.)
You can cup your
hands, scoop some water and hold the flaming water in
your hand without
being burned. It's wonderful and ephemeral. To me,
unconditional love is
like holding that tiny pool of flaming water in your
hand. If you hold it
gently and carefully, the flame burns. You feel
blessed to be able to be
part of its existence, its beauty. But if you try to
act upon it (by moving
your hands or blowing) the flame will vanish. That
ability to hold a flame
(love) in you without trying to control or change it.
That's unconditional
love.

Namaste,
Paula
