I have been recently having a discussion with a martial arts instructor of the Hoshinbudo tradition and Hoshinjutsu ryo regarding chi sickness and kundalini psychosis.

He had injured himself lately and had come to me for healing.
We began to talk shop about energy sickness and energy cultivation and manipulation techniques.

I was struck at the correspondances between the Chinese system of the greater Kan and Li and Kundalini rising. There is Kan and Li Qi Qong, an energy practice of energy cultivation.

"Kan means water, and Li is fire. Kan and Li Qi Gong (energy practice)cultivation is one of the ancient esoteric secret alchemy practices in
the tradition of the Tao. This process unifies Water-Fire, Yin-Yang,Moon-Sun, Female-Male, and Physical-Spiritual aspects of each person; it also reflects the integration of nature, a process creating life. Kan and Li practice culminates in an awareness and experience of eternal life; it is a formula for realizing one's true spiritual nature."

From Spiritual Qi Gong: A practical Taoist manual for Health, Longevity and Self Realization by Dr. David Twicken

To awaken the energy of the Kan and Li in a controlled situation takes about three years. To awaken Kundalini in the Hindu system takes approximately three years of meditative practice.

The Chinese purposely made the process three years because in their culture they are uncomfortable dealing with mental illness and craziness. I imagine the Hindu purpose was similiar. Unfortunately, nothing is said about the increased number of spontaneous awakenings of this energy and how to deal with the problems of chi sickness or kundalini psychosis.

Since the instructor was not very familiar with the chakra system I asked him if the chi sickness happens when the energy gets kinda stuck in the navel center, the will/power center. He said yes. I told him I see the K psychosis when the energy seems to be stuck in the third chakra. ( it can stagnate in other areas too)

I told him that Western medicine is now recognizing this sickness or psychosis and calling it Spiritual Crisis. It is a recognized diagnosis for a mental condition in the
The Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the DSM-IV.

Just thought I throw this out for discussion.
