Hi,

It's me again. There were some questions on neti neti, also more correctly
called "Jala neti" and I promised to get back with a reference or two on it.

I have two books that are commonly available in the west, or have been in
the past. They have some age on them, one was first published in the last
'60s (one of my copies is from the 80s) and the other was first published in
the late 70s.

The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga by Swami Vishnudevananda ISBN
0-671-41646-4 (paper) talks about it on page 29 and following pages. Most of
the attention is focused on sutra (string) neti but using water alone is
mentioned too.

The Complet Yoga Book by James Hewitt (contains Yoga of Breathing, Yoga of
Posture, and Yoga of Meditation in one volume) has a discussion of neti on
pages 43 to 45. Again string neti is what is discussed most but washing is
included.

For the truly hardcore, the source of all of this is the Hatha Yoga
Pradipika and it is available in English. There are several translations the
one I have the most faith in is from the Bihar School of Yoga by Swami
Satyananda Saraswati and Swami Muktibodhananda Saraswati. She,
Muktibodhanda, is the primary author of this book. He is the head of the
school and is a author or co-author of a number of books, all excellent, at
least all I've seen. Perhaps a bit terse in some areas and written like an
Indian, not like a Westerner, but very good books. Amazon has some if not
all of his books, I didn't check to see if this one was there. I got my copy
in India in 1990, and it has no ISBN at all so I can't give you that, sorry.

Neti is covered in Chapter 2 Verse 29. Again the focus in on sutra neti but
in the commentary jala neti is mentioned as needed before it. That is
standard if you are doing sutra neti but you can quit with just the nasal
wash and get great benefit.

If you have any questions let me know. If someone wrote something to me
since Friday on this, or any other topic, I didn't respond because I didn't
get it. There was a screwup and my inbox got nothing since Friday.

Namaste,

Joe.
