I started to have vibrational stuff happening on the edge of sleep when I
was a sophmore in college. I, too, felt great fear right at the moment when
I would be feeling like I was going to leave my body. I felt like I was
going to die, or be destroyed, or something. I started calling on angelic
guides (although I never particularly thought about angels--it just felt
right to call on them then) and I gave them names: Gabrielle and
Michelangelo (I know that's the name of a painter, but that's what I called
him). Everytime I felt scared after that I just asked them to protect me
and all my fear went away.

I don't know about the long-term consequences of looking for
"protection"...it reinforces the idea of a world of duality. Helpful in the
lower chakras...not so helpful higher up (see Mystress Angelique's
discussion of duality in archives).
