It has become clear to me in my experience that the degree to which I am able to experience joy, ecstasy is equivalent to the degree with which I am able to withstand pain, suffering. At some point I will be "killed" by both, then neither will matter.

  That's exactly how it's been for me too! I think depression at least in
  episodic form is a natural clearing mechanism and it's high time the psychs
  cottoned on to this.
