Subject: [K-list] meaning and K
From: Stephen Kowalchuk

On 2002/01/23 09:14, Stephen Kowalchuk posted thus to the K-list:

If you want to talk about humanity's search for meaning, that could fill a
couple of books. The bottom line is that life in the purely physical sense
comes and goes, and the only thing left of us when we die off is some dust and
some memories and our progeny. And in a few million years, or billion years, or
whatever (does it matter?) the planet will explode or be swallowed up by the sun
when it goes red giant or a plague will wipe us out or something....

Impermanence. Deal with it. That which is physical is transient.

So to live a life totally in the physical, without any sense of a greater
context, is a trivial exercise. In the end, it does not matter. This is what I
mean when I say "life is meaningless".

We can't prove to the physical universe the existence of higher dimensions of
existence. (I use "higher" as a generic term to mean "more than 4", not to make
a value judgement on physical existence) Give it up. It's like trying to prove
the nature of a sphere to a circle...theoretically "yeah fine" but tacitly "I
don't think so". The frame of reference just isn't there.

So we believe, a la Pascal's Wager ("If I believe in God and he does not exist,
I lose nothing. But if I don't believe in God, and he does exist, I lose
everything."), that *something* more exists. And the race begins to label and
define and drag into the physical universe the characterization of these
dimensions. But be careful -- these labels are approximations. They are
perceptions. They are 4-dimensional representations of much more complicated
phenomena. They are even more hampered by the use of a language to describe
them. Thus, the search for meaning of one's existence here, when taken from
anywhere except your own personal tacit experience of your own personal
spirituality, is invariably tainted and marginalized and made palatable to a
whole lot of other people who are NOT you.

In order to transcend the impermanence of physical existence, we can tap the
higher dimensions inside ourselves. I can't tell you why we can tap it, though
I have some theories. But I and other people have been able to find some
evidence of higher dimensions (which again we presume to be outside the realm of
space and time, but we have no 4-dimensional proof), which can provide us with
insight on the many-dimensional context in which we live. And this insight can
provide us with clues, guided by intention, which can help us understand "why"
we are here.

It's not a glib one-liner of an answer. There are no doubt hundreds or
thousands of small reasons, and a few large trends. For instance, I happened to
be in the right place and the right time to keep a friend of mine from killing
himself a number of years ago. A small reason, in the grand scheme, but it was
indicative of a trend of finding myself in "right places" to help people heal.
So I infer that part of my purpose here is as a facilitator of healing.

And it's not concrete. There is plenty of room to say, "well that could happen
anyway. That's not higher dimensions....that's fate, or your own desires, or
delusion." And you could certainly be right. A serious skeptic would look at
99% of what I say and shrug.

Any search for meaning within something as inherently meaningless as physical
existence is inevitably forced to take a stand on the preponderance of the
evidence, which is always shaky. Faith of one kind or another will emerge.
It's part of the human condition. And those who have faith in nothing, still
have faith.

The word Kundalini is also inherently meaningless outside its descriptive
powers. The intention we place behind the word Kundalini is meaningful because
it is meaningful to us.

I think K brings different benefits to different people. To ask what K is good
for implies a value judgement I don't want to contend with (despite the fact I
talked about it in a past post...check the archives perhaps?). The cost/benefit
equation is individual to each person. K is a force with which you can align
yourself, or not. How you interact with that force it up to you.

Blessings,

Steve
