Jane -- some assorted thoughts:

If you do have a low serotonin level, and it sounds very much like you do,
St. John's Wort or the SSRI anti-depressants will help you. Give them a good
3-4 week trial period if you haven't done so already. Low serotonin can
manifest as grief, anguish, no joy, sleep disturbance, etc. Many now think
PMS is a manifestation of low serotonin which is why low levels of prozac are
being prescribed for it.

For many of us, the biggest stumbling block to spiritual awakening was the
belief that it could only happen to others. Have faith. You are already
awake, just behind this erroneous belief.

The feeling you are not your body is actually true and you may be onto this
truth. On the other hand, many spiritual experiences are felt as very subtle
phenomena in and around the body so the more you are connected to your
physical experience, the more you will be likely to notice unusual
happenings. Most of us dissociate from our bodies because of emotional pain
and have to re-confront the pain -- get back into the body -- as we wake up
spiritually. I don't know if this is true for you. But it sounds like you
and your body have been through some rough times so if there is need for
reconciliation and love, allow this to happen. Illness doesn't prevent
awakening, however; for many it catalyzes it. Love, Holly
