What fun, both of you! Thanks for the posting.

As a young kid in Germany, that mushroom was an icon for me. We
painted it, played with it, sang about it, went for walks in the
forest and looked at it (its brothers), ate it (its brothers)... it
is so ingrained in the German consciousness...

Mystress, those cards you found, though they look antique, still have
equivalents that go out these days... Viel Gluck! Ja voll! I don't
think the wish is for 'luck / good fortune'... rather,
for 'happiness' (if you know what I mean.. <g>)...

And below, a vignette of a dream in response to all these posts about
mushrooms... a meshing of my current and past landscapes. :)

Gesegnete Weihnachten und ein glückliches neues Jahr!
Nina

. . .

Looking down into a hollow in the forest terrain, tall hardwoods,
bare of leaves, golden brown trunks rising straight, tall, direct
towards the sky. Brown cabin nestled within them on the forest floor,
board and batten, wood construction, aging, blending with the colors
of the forest, dull drabs, the muted tones of fallen leaves, leaves
fallen on the roof of the cabin, a thick mat.

A thick mat of leaves, also, on the slightly redbrown dirt, this area
free of the detritus often seen on the forest floor: the fallen
twigs, the decaying logs, the underbrush. However, there is a brown
woman, a hag, scouring the dry forest floor, harvesting mushrooms.
She has secret knowledge of the location of those mushrooms and how
to cook them.

My brother's face, shining white wax, asleep and floating up as if
from the depths of water, eyes closed, arms crossed over his chest
and utterly at peace. This is a vision from the story of the drowned
maiden.

The vendors are setting up for Bele Chere, a name that means,
loosely, 'the beautiful life', in my 'neck of the woods', a gigantic
summer street festival that expands the population of this city by
3x. I am walking in the street, watching vendors set up their stalls.
In one stall, a woman dressed in jewel toned cottons, elaborately
embroidered (Turkish), smooth golden brown skin, wild dark hair
covered with a swath of her dress, laughing with neighboring vendors
about her activity, is cooking 'eggless French toast'... the key
ingredient? Mushrooms.
