Antoine, what a good point you have made.
 
Children, dogs, most creatures, respond to the 'climate' of response  
as much as the situation. If one is creating a processive climate of  
response, this opens the door for children to process a situation. If  
one is creating a climate of fear in response to a situation, guess  
what? I suppose what children are teaching in that instance would be  
along the lines of "address your own fear".
 
Oh, by the way, Susan, I am not responding to your question because I  
have no specific answers. I am no mother (whew, is there a lot of  
birth control out there! I'm not speaking of the pill... argh.) and  
my parents weren't particularly gifted at addressing the situations  
you mentioned. Unless you're looking for responses like: "get over  
it" or "pretend it isn't happening" or "quick, distract her". :)
