Well, I am not a parent yet, but having gone through periods of huge fears 
and anxiety myself, it is my experience that gentle physical contact helps 
best. Feeling a warm, loving, comforting hand on your hand or arm can even 
help. No directions, just "being there for you" of another person is the 
best, in my experience. No pushing, just inviting warm contact.
 
I have a small anecdote on that: once I was alone at home, lying in my bed, 
going through tremendous fears of death, nobody around. I have two cats, 
sisters, they were still young at that time. They came onto my bed, lied 
down beside my arm and both put their pawns (? - their feet?) right on my 
arm.  You won't believe how much that helped, those small creatures feeling 
my fears and lying right beside me trying to comfort me....
