Angelique,

As an architect, I have come across many a potential and actual
client who undervalues my service and product. I have heard people
quibble about a 5% fee on huge projects. It is amazing how scarcity
consciousness can focus and fixate on the smallest portions of the
equation. (My fee may be around 8%, but on a multi-million dollar
project, that is peanuts... the really big buck expenditures of
stupid decisions and poor planning can be avoided if one plunks down
a fair payment for a capable architect.) There is perhaps a
correlation between how our respective professions devalue themselves
when services are frivolously granted to those who don't appreciate
the 'gift'. This is where the 'never work for free' mindset comes
from...
