I know because I have put much thought into this. I have found two camps on this topic.
One says spiritual advice should be free, others, it should come with cost. I have found that
the cost based approach actually suits the spiritual endeavor much better. The reason is
because a form of exchange is maintained between the participants. I found that when I was
counciling a person without allowing this exchange to occur I was impacting the relationship
in a negative way. This person tried very hard to do things for me, this person didn't know
why, but the higher self was trying to repay me for my services. I found that by not allowing
her to do these acts I was suppressing her. So I learned that I must allow others to repay me
when I provide such a service. To not do so is a suppressive act. Having up front costs
works best.
Another part of this is that since there are few real spiritual teacher, their time should be spent
on only those that are really serious about the endeavor. Someone who is willing to pay a
premium for the services deserves more attention and service. This person understand the
value of the service and will give it a serious effort. Why should a spiritual teacher spend time
with half-hearted students?
Finally, the old saying is, you get what you pay for.
