I met to answer this earlier befor I, ahem, got carried away.

I suspect your pineal gland was being activated. It sits almost
directly center in the brain. The pineal gland is metaphysically
connected with the soul.

The pineal gland can be activated with a visualization of a ray of
light coming in thru your third eye to the center of your head.
The pineal gland is associated with the feeling of joy and bliss.
There once was a fellow in Sedona, Arizona who developed a series of
meditations about this and wrote a little book but I have forgotten
his name.

It does feel so good it hurts :) and it is extremely blissful feeling
that carries over into the body. Sometime I carry that feeling for
several days.
