Subject: [K-list] To Chuck - re observations about mental illness on list.

Just wanted to say something on this. First I totally support what Nick has just said about K and medication - I've been a long term victim of this myself (see my other post about homeopathy).

Secondly, I think the term 'mental illness', plus all the other psychiatry profession ordained labels which have become common parlance in describing any 'non ordinary state of mind', just serve to reinforce stereotypes society holds about such individuals. But sadly these are the only commonly understood terms we have, at least in the science/rational/cartesian dominated west. Even I refer to myself as having been mentally ill, when I don't actually agree!

In spiritual terms what I have experienced (6 depressive breakdowns) would be more accurately described as 'dark long nights of the soul' , or 'crisis and emergence', or 'ego breakdown and renewal', 'psychological death and rebirth'. Such terms as so much more positive, creative, empowering in terms of the way the 'sufferer' is perceived, and far better depict the actual creative process at work. Because that is exactly what it is, (or is trying to be). I am sick and tired of being labelled a 'victim' and a 'sufferer' when actually I consider myself incredibly lucky to have received the amazing rewards that such a creative, if extremely painful process have produced.

I think Jung had pretty good insight. He believed neurosis was an attempt at self cure, and madness to be the striving for superior insight.

Kundalini is about the clearing out of the scummy old parts of the unconscious (the repressed shadow side of ourselves) that hold back our higher potentialities, in order to clear the way for their emergence and growth. That clearing out process will often involve a 'crisis' or a series of crises as it's gradually put into effect over the course of years/decades. It depends on the individual as to how those crises will manifest. It could be as 'ordinary' as losing your job, or a partner. Not everyone is going to get 'mentally ill'.
