On 2001/09/20 11:08, Xerxenca posted thus to the K-list: We've suffered a horrible shock and we're numb and the grief is starting to
flower. It's very hard to reason now. It's triggering everyone's issues and
reactivity. Isn't that normal though? I know on the streets and subways here
people are being gentle with each other, even when someone starts to lose it
- I'm sure at least somewhat with the hope that others will be compassionate
with them when they're being reactive.

I'm an American, living and working on lower Manahattan. I've also lived
abroad, worked with aboriginal peoples and development economics. I've seen
some good and bad impacts of American policies and some good and bad things
that were entirely unrelated to anything American. I've dedicated most of my
profesional efforts over the last 10 years to giving the "public" a greater
voice in our democratic process. For all sorts of different resons the
"American" issue has been highly problemetized for me for a long time. But I
do know that most of America simply has never really thought about the rest
of the world. Middle America has had the luxury and misfortune of being
isolated from "otherness" and many people are being confronted with these
issues for the first time.

Might I suggest folks read an opinion column from yesterday's London Guardian:
