Sorry for taking this out of context - just want to say that anybody who has
been to the states that I have met here in Europe, including myself, is very
capable of differentiating between american people, and american
government/policy - so who is the "we"? I have experienced Americans as
very openhearted people. Maybe with an endless trust in their own democratic
system - but this was 10 years ago I was over there, it might have changed,
I don't know now how it is.

There is a tremendous support for this tragedy, for the victims, the shock
it has caused to everybody. It is western world, it is horrible terrorism in
a way that was too simple to even imagine it would happen for real one day.
It is american foreign policy for decades that causes the hatred as far as I
can see, and maybe Bush' latest attitude, that puts an ugly crown on that
old attitude.

Who is supporting that attitude in the states? I haven't met them anyway.
Most people I met didn't vote - but didn't agree with politics either.
Most were loving and very openhearted and probably in reality more tolerant
to people from different cultural backgrounds than we are. Here in holland
it takes two generations at least before we will consider somebody dutch.
Before that: you are surinam, maroccan, turkish etc. You have to work hard
to be accepted in dutch society. In the states I found you are accepted as
an American citizen as soon as you live there and stick to the laws. This an
american good that is there - and has absolutely nothing to do with the
terrible politics that have put so much hatred in so many parts of the
world.
Unfortunately the states have not exported that tolerant attitude. We do
very much do the opposite thing in Holland by the way: export and praise our
tolerance, but trying to make your way into dutch culture as a foreigner is
not easy at all. I have met so many lonely foreigners here.

Anyway - nothing K-related maybe, just wanted to let you know.

José
