What I have observed is that Americans are many things, are feeling
many things, at this time. Many times more varied feelings than
Americans, even, is what I am suspecting. This "apologetic" strain is
but one among many strains. There is room for this.

There is a table upon which all feelings and actions are laid out.
Each of us sits at this table and views the array before us, but each
of us reach only those elements of the array that are within our
arms' range. What of the other elements? Are they any less valuable?
Are they any less real?

Do I trust the broadcasts? Do I trust the pundits? Do I trust the
tearjerking stories of my friends and neighbors? Do I trust myself to
make decisions at this scale?

What is justice in a situation such as this?

Does it require the recounting of all sins? The determination of
blame? The determination of victim, aggressor, executioner, and
convicted?

A better question: what would the best possible outcome be? The most
productive and healthiest outcome? The outcome with the most
integrity for the health of a continuing planet and human community?

And the question that follows: how do we get there?

If I were to take nationalistic or religious fervor and overlay it on
those two questions, I wonder whether they would support that
outcome. Would war support that outcome? Would nonaction support that
outcome?

Is there a better, ultimately more productive way?
