The above quote is only one of many that l could cite as an example of
the expressions of the past couple of days that make me feel uneasy. lt
reminds me that spiritual concepts can be used to enable us to deny reality
as well as to positively respond to and shape it.

The acts of Tuesday can reasonably be considered to be
acts of war committed against this country, and a response of great force is
naturally to be expected. Probably tens of thousands of innocent lives were
taken in a scene that can only be described as inconceivable and mind
numbing. The heart of American financial and governmental affairs was
targeted. The President himself was targeted for destruction. To think that
there would be anything other than a powerful response is naive, to say the
least.
This is
not to say that the US hasn't made mistakes, cause we've made some very big
ones -- acts that have no doubt had horrible consequences. And this will no
doubt continue. But one must be able to discriminate between an essentially
moral country that makes mistakes as opposed to an essentially evil entity
that is fueled primarily by hatred and malevolence and can only be dealt with
by force.
lf leaders of the free world had relied upon
spiritual axioms during the past century, rather upon the use of force,
Hitler would have prevailed -- Stalin's evil empire would have expanded much
farther than it did. The sanity and safety of this planet and its inhabitants
has always relied upon the ability of reponsible people to use force in a
wise and judicious way. Hopefully the days will dawn when this will become
unneccessary, but this week's events remind us that that day has not yet
come.

To use force in an appropriate way in the current situation will be an
awesomely difficult thing to do, given the complexities, but that is the
challenge that awaits us.
