A young Hispanic woman, maybe 19-20 yrs old, with her young child, maybe
3-4, is seated across from me. The bus passes by an old Catholic neighborhood
church, and the mother crosses herself, then makes the sign of the cross on
the child's forehead.

The child's immediate reaction is to cop a disgusted look on his face, put
his little hand to his forehead like he's plucking the cross from it, and
fling the cross across the bus. Like he was saying, "Don't put this crap on
me."

I was utterly amazed. Who knows why the little boy really did that, but from
an outsider's point of view, it was very poetic.

l must confess that l don't see anything poetic about this -- it's
hardly surprising for a 3 yr old child to react this way. On the other hand,
although not Catholic, l'm always moved by a simple act of faith.
