I had a active volcano turn up in a painting early this year.
I asked for some understanding about it and this is what I got.

Aphrodite?

Serena, the volcano was an image of your own power from which you
were alienated. You've done a lot of work since on owning that power.

Mountains are a symbol of calm strength, but volcanos are another matter
entirely. Whatever you deny about yourself comes back at you in
some other form. In your life, you were experiencing the power of the
volcano, your own alienated power, in the form of your disruptive,
explosive and damaging fights with Stefan. You went cold, and he
went spewing lava. It was ~your~ lava he was spewing, however.

You were giving him your (emerging)
power and he was throwing it back at you and the results were pretty
awful for you both. Since you've embraced more of your power
(yes, you've still got more to go), the fights with Stefan have stopped
and been replaced with effective problem-solving and steadiness
(mountain-like qualities).

The power associated with the volcano can be uncomfortable
to admit to consciousness -- it carries the threat of violence, and
it feels "out of control". The out-of-controlness has much to do with
how long and how severely the energy/truths involved are denied and
repressed, to what extent you disown your own power.

When you come across a smoking volcano, you've
got a choice. You can
either continue on as you are and expect an explosion
in your life -- an eruption manifesting in some way or another -- or, you
can have a sit-down with you yourSelf and Eye, and plan on feeling
hothothot for a while. Blowing vs. venting.

Either way, once the volcano shows up, things are going to
change- which is often why you repressed the energy of the volcano
in the first place. The scent of change was on the wind,
and you froze in your tracks when you smelled it. :-)

The volcano situation is somewhat
similar to the one represented by the Tower in the Tarot,
but the energies and issues are usually different.
For you, the Tower has shown up when you've outgrown
old paradigms for understanding all that Is- the Tower is the old
intellectual construct that no longer serves and gets blasted flat
by new intuitive truths. The volcano is more about your landscape
shifting/needing to shift in response to personal growth and change,
emergent capacities/abilities (if raw/untutored), increasing levels
of "empowerment" (in a word).

Volcano energies/abilities are ones you are meant to embrace
and learn to use. They are about creating the new, here and now.
You don't change and grow yet get to keep the same
familiar landscape.

In time, with work, volcanos do become mountains- the disruptive
threatening newness becomes calm steady strength.
