Right on! He is paying attention. :) Frustrating, yes... I can
definitely see that. I have had students with such intensity of
focus. Wore me thin after a day of working with them... difficult to
find the balance between what they desired to do and what I felt I
was required (by the program I was teaching under) to accomplish.
Then I would go to sleep at night, wake up, and do it again the next
day.

I used the same approach with those students that I used when
training my dogs. You get to know their drives and learn to funnel
their drives in directions "productive" to the given moment. This
does take a whoppin' load of insight, patience and persistence. :)

My dogs' drives are: positive attention from the alpha (me! And I
know exactly how they like to be scratched), schedule/pattern, food,
fleecy stuffed toys, sleeping on soft things, running after each
other and various balls. I purposefully have chosen not to enhance
their food drive with treats for good behavior or any access
to "people food". (I can't always have ham sandwiches in my pockets
to entice good behavior.) I have also purposefully chosen not to
enhance their dominance drive with dominance games such as tug-of-
war. (That one is very applicable to teenagers!) I have also
discovered the helpful tool of distraction: doggie habitually
dropping a hard bone on wood floors? No problem... get them excited
about a fleecy toy. /grin/ Hehe! And another trick (that works even
if you catch them after-the-fact... a timing that is useless in most
situations): has the dog eaten a portion of a houseplant? Pick up the
remains of the plant and give it a good blessing-out... yell and
curse and behave as if it has just been evicted from "the pack". No
self-respecting dog would ever touch a plant that has been attacked
by the alpha. /grin/

Mainly, it takes a lot of creativity to deal with drive-related
behaviors... and that takes energy... but if you can develop a few
good "tricks", things get much easier. Working with, rather than
against, the drive is the main thing...

:) No doubt you have much experience with such things...

What brand of hoses do you buy? I think I'd like to buy stock. /grin/
Hrm... we used to have a Family Dollar store downstairs... cheap
hoses, I noticed... not a dollar, but cheap. Perhaps cheaper hoses?
Or get Catlin interested in irrigation... an irrigation system for
your yard? Perhaps the T Buddhists could get him interested in
(chopping wood and) carrying water? ;)

Who knows! Perhaps you should try experimenting with really obscure
outcomes. :) Those are much more fun than positive outcomes... plus,
you can be for-sure-certain that when the garden hose transforms into
a kundalinic serpent and does the boogy dance in your driveway, it
was -your thinking- that manifested... and not just some silly
coincidence. :)

Best of what serves, Cat.
