On 2001/07/30 23:46, Pradeep Kumar posted thus to the K-list: Meditation can be done while sitting, standing, savasana or any
comfortable posture. Meditation can be with a seed or without it.
It can be ajapajap.

As of specific postures that are suggested in ancient texts on
hathayoga pradipika and such, those are mainly to make sure the
"prana" unites with "apana" thereby causing Kundalini enter into
Sushumna. These postures are Sidhhasana or Yoni-asana that typically
causes setting mulabandha (pressing the heel against body stitches)while
pranayama is coupled with uddiyana
and jalandhara. So specific requirements are only for kundalini-yoga
and not for meditation per se. No where in Patanjali yoga sutras, there is a
mention about any particular sitting postures. It is the sage Adinath and
Gorakhanath in ancient India (10th century) who discovered techniques to
arouse kundalini rapidly and preparing the body to handle the enormous
experiences one gets after that. asanas condition the
body to handle that.
Mind you, a person can reach samadhi even without experiencing kundalini
arousal effects depending upon how much sadhana happened in the past life.
So I would say, go ahead and do mantra chanting in any position you are on
right path.
