Dear Susan,

I grew up in Tornado Alley. Some of my most profound memories of my
father are of him standing outside, face up-turned, hands in pockets,
silhouetted against the green sky, watching as the twisters
approached, great band of wall-cloud roiling, rolling forward. That
mattress-lined bathtub at the center of the house held nothing
against the power of being outside at sublime moments like that...
feeling the suck in the air right before the fracturing lines of
lightning would jet from the clouds, followed by the moment of
suspension before the thunder. I'll take my thunder and lightning
with hail and wind anyday...
