Well, to me it seems more likely that they are manipulative people with a
very dangerous definition of love, who are afraid for the integrity of
their perception of reality, and if a head seems to stick out of the crowd,
they'll do their best to chop it off.
This behavior is known as a combination of xenophobia and paranoia, and the
reason for that is simple: they seek safety in the public agreement, the so
called safety of the herd. The worst thing one could do to them is to point
out that this isn't safety at all, and that they could actually all be
mistaken. You'd be surprized at what they would be ready to do, in order to
protect their illusions.
