What many people do not understand .. and this is something that
I have found out from bitter experience ..
is that when some "well meaning" therapist who does not understand
the meaning and principles of "transference" gets deeply involved
with a client on an emotional level .. without clearing all of their own
personal issues first ..
they can (and very often do) trap both themselves
and their client (friend) into a self-repeating pattern ..
often unconsciously ..
as is the case illustrated in point by what has
happened with mystress here.
Yes .. what I may write at times may seem to be unfeeling, cool, aloof ..
all of those words ... but working on this level with people,
I must maintain a level of detachment .. because, if I do not
I know I will trap the people I am writing to
into their cycle .. and I will take on, a passenger
their particular trauma archetype ..
and when one works with severe trauma cases, this can be
very draining .. as is seen by the number of therapists who go
through "therapeutic burnout".
When you are working on yourself, you will get nowhere
until and unless you cut all ties with any priests, guru's
therapists, masters .. and well meaning friends
with whom you have opened yourself seeking
sympathy and understanding.
When, as a therapist, you are working with a client, if it matters
to you what happens with your client to the point where you cannot
maintain some level of detachment, you are going to eventually
cripple yourself before long.
In this case .. and you cannot fully dismiss the client/friend
at the end of the session, there is a reflection of the client's
story within you which is unresolved.
The same can be said for family .. especially where there was a
close relationship between two (or more) children.
I have often encountered transference between children
where the client is actually looking through the eyes of a
sibling .. and the bipolar personality I am dealing with
is a passenger taken on very early in life.
In such a case, it is necessary to identify who I am dealing
because healing can not take place if the therapist is working
with a passenger personality .. and not the real client.
The other thing here .. is that I refuse to work with someone who has
had a sexual relationship within 3 days of the session because, there
is again, the transference of the partner as an overlay onto the client
Which is again .. one of the reasons that a lot of sexual abuse
trauma does not work, because the victim is permeated with
the troubled personality of the abuser .. and because there is
a mutual victim resonance in every such case, there can be
no resolution until both personalities are addressed.
To every person who comes to me saying
"I want to be a healer or therapist" ..
I ask the question
"who or what is it in you that needs healing"
and, yes, for me, it has been a long process ..
one that has only been possible because I looked
at every pattern presented to me by a client
in terms of
"what, if anything, is this person reflecting to me
that needs resolution within myself"
and I also know that most .. if not everything that I would write
or say to a client .. is spoken firstly to my self so that my own
body may hear the advice that I would present to my client.
