This experience popped into mind reading your email.

When I was in college I had what I admitted to myself and others was just a
minor sore throat and trekked down to the infirmary to get it looked at
(note, if I took it seriously enough to go to the infirmary it was likely
something) -- the nurse looked at it and gave me some Chloraseptic and then
sent me on my way - the next day or maybe two, it was worse - tonsil very
swollen - so i went back, this time a young doctor looked at it - he said
hmm, I am not sure - but this looks like Quinsy (peritonsillar abscess) -
i was sent immediately to a specialist (if i remember correctly they gave me
a ride in the campus ambulance). The specialist took one good look and
started to make arrangements to get me into the hospital. My sore throat
treated with Chloraseptic was indeed peritonsillar abscess and i had
mononucleosis to boot. The infirmary did not know my pain threshold or my
threshold for seeking medical attention.

Yes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, most doctors in this day and age
are not accustomed to people stoically accepting pain or discomfort. Sounds
like you get points to me.

But, you really need to be prepared when you go to an MD. They are not gods
that are seriously looking out for your health and well being. You need to
have done your research on the web before hand and have your list of
questions. And then if they do not respond find a new Doctor. BTW, I so
hate going to see an MD that I would put up with almost anything rather than
face those idiots. The diagnosis must be super obvious or they will
misdiagnose and then they are just interested in writing prescriptions and
not treating any underlying issue. (end rant)
