this sounds so familiar... i was once called by the most beautiful bed
of moss on a mountain trail... on my friend the mountain, my most sacred
spot on Earth... i knelt to worship... nuzzled my face in what felt like
the velvety pubic bush of Goddess's vagina... and i felt such love, and
felt so loved back... my love affair with Mother Earth surrounding me in
Her rich pungent aroma released as i pressed my face into Her fur... and
i was given a miraculous gift...

unknown to me at the time, a tick carrying the lyme disease bacteria
crawled into my hair, and made love with my scalp... i must have
scratched it off without ever being aware of its presence... the next
day a rash appeared on my ears, forehead and nose...almost like a
sunburn that didn't reach my lower face... the tell-tale bullseye pale
center of the rash was under my scalp and could not be seen... it didn't
hurt or itch, i didn't feel sick, and it disappeared on its own in about
a week or two...

that winter, a strange flu without cold symptoms laid me up for a few
weeks of missed work... and i got better... but persistant unexplained
pains remained in my neck at times... and often in my arms; one, or the
other, and sometimes both... it ran from my "funny bone" below the
elbow, down into my pinky and ring finger... then the following spring
the mysterious flu returned, this time for almost a month... i didn't
even have a doctor because i'd been so healthy for the thirty-something
years before this... but i found a doctor, and the doctor could find
nothing... when the flu ended, she suggegsted asprin or ibuprofen for
the occasional minor neck and arm pains...saying, "we all feel some
degree of pain at times, this does not seem serious... if it gets worse,
come back and we'll run some more intensive tests..."

shortly afterwards, i read about lyme disease, and it sounded
familiar... this was the mid 1980's ,and doctors weren't so aware of it
then... my doctor skeptically and patronizingly tested me for it at my
persistent request... the test came back negative... i still felt that
it must be lyme disease, and went to major New York medical center with
a lyme disease clinic... they examined me and tested me... the tests
were negative... it was official, the high priests of medicine said, "we
don't know what you have, but it isn't lyme disease..."

after 3 years i started deteriorating rapidly and developed major
neurological symptoms... ibecome unable to work, and was now mostly
homebound... i was mercifully put on narcotics and tranquilizers for the
severe symptoms despite not having a diagnosis... then i came upon a
medical guru... someone very familiar with lyme disease and the
difficulty in diagnosing it with tests that even the CDC claimed had
only a 60% accuracy rate... just a little better than flipping a coin...
he diagnosed it as lyme disease merely from his exam and my history...
he followed specialized protocols and both types of lyme tests confirmed
that i did in fact have the disease... it was now 5 years after
contracting it... lyme is a disease that is usually cured when caught
early... but in my case, it was too late for the rigorous antibiotic
protocols i went through to cure it...

i spent another 6 years trying all sorts of alternative cures that
weren't successful... for the last couple of years, i have
surrendered... i accept this gift Mother Earth has given me; it has
changed the course of my life, mostly for the better... but it is often
difficult, and those who know me see me come and go on this list based
on the ups and downs i go through... i am not seeking advice here,
merely telling my tale...

so when you are called by a beautiful bed of moss... yes, worship it...
make love with it... also take precautions to check for ticks... and get
treated immediately if you show signs of lyme disease... it can be a
painful and crippling illness... it rarely kills you, although at times
it may make you call out a prayer to the merciful Angel of Death... and
these deep encounters with the mortality of our physical shells, and the
magnificent Spirit that inhabits them; they have you knowing much about
where the value of living in this world truly lies...

thank you, Nina... i was not planning on telling this story here and
now... but your poetic way of describing how that beautiful lush green
fur of the Earth had called out to you, has called out to me.. and this
story has just written itself as my fingers typed faster than my mind
could catch up to them...

warmly,

percyval
