Jua de Yepes b 1542 in Fontiveros Spain

Became Friar John of the Carmelite order

Studied Theology .. University of Salamanca

became an aesthetic age 26 and met Teresa of Avila 1n 1567

There was a split in the Carmelite order and the "Barefoots"
or the Descalzos became a breakaway order .. which was a return
to fundamental Carmelite principals

Friar John became John of the Cross under the "new" order in 1568

He was arrested by an armed party from the other Carmelites ..
the Calzados in 1576 and was imprisoned in a solitary unlighted cell.

He replied to his captors who attempted to bribe him with
  "he who looks on Christ naked
    has no need for jewels"

It was during this period of solitude when he was alone in the dark
with no contact with the outside world that he had his "revelations"
or awakening .. He was fed only bread and water
and continually whiplashed.

After 9 months of this, a more friendly guard supplied him with
pen and paper .. "The Dark Night of the Soul" was his third piece ..
originally written in Spanish

Later, with assistance from the jailer, he escaped and returned
to the Order of the Barefoot .. and St Theresa ..

Over the next few years, he wrote several treatises on Mystical Theology

He was exiled from the order in 1591 ..
became very ill from a festering leg wound .. and died in the priory of
Ubeda ..
"I abandoned and forgot myself
Laying my face on my Beloved;
All things ceased;
I went out from myself
leaving my cares
forgotten among the lilies"
