Dear JB,

My twin (a Tibetan Buddhist) wrote this (see below) for another list. Being
*overwhelmed* by the world's ills is natural, but rather counterproductive,
wouldn't you say? I think that these energies help us move away from selfish
considerations so as to help others as best we can.

Love, Hillary

A Buddhist would say, in short, "Yes, the Universe is perfect as
it is. In an ultimate sense. BUT. Look around you.
In a relative sense you cannot deny that there is great suffering
in the world and evil abounds. It is as if "perfection" were wrapped
in filthy rags. Which are very very real to us. So how do we go about
unentangling ourselves? How do we go about helping alleviate some
of this misery? By learning how the universe works is how. Which is
both where logic and philosophy come in. Buddhism produced a
couple of the greatest logicians of all time. Dignaga and Dharmakirti

This is not to denigrate "good works." But it is always wise to remember
the old adage: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." We may
think we are helping someone...when in fact we are harming them.
Knowledge, particularly of cause and effect, is the key to "right action."
