Valentine's Day approaches. Although St. Valentine was a Christian
martyr, the most common symbol for the holiday is Dan Cupid, shown as a
winged baby with a bow and arrows.

The Roman Cupid's image was influenced by the Greek Eros. Eros was the
son of Aphrodite, goddess of Love, and more often shown as a handsome
winged youth. The Roman writer Apuleius, in "The Golden Ass," tells the
story of an adult Cupid, pierced by his own arrow, who falls in love with
a mortal princess, Psyche (Soul).

In India, the God of Lust is called Kama. Like Eros, he is a handsome
youth, armed with a bow and five arrows. The bow is made from sugarcane,
it is strung with a line of bumblebees, and the arrows have flowers
instead of arrowheads: the blue-black lotus, the jasmine, the
mango-flower, the champaka, and the shirisa.

Some say Kama was born at the beginning of Creation, from a thought of
Brahma. (Note that the Greeks also said Eros was was of the first Gods,
born from Night.) Others say that Kama was the son of Lakshmi, a goddess
who has much in common with Aphrodite, by her consort Vishnu.

Kama has a wife, Rati (Sex). They are most often shown together naked,
in various sexual postures. He also has a younger brother, Krodha
(Anger). When Love is stifled, it often turns to wrath. (The Greek Eros
had a brother, Anteros or "Not Love.")

The Hindus have an ambivalent attitude towards Kama. On the one hand,
Kama is one of the Four Goals of Life: Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha
(Right Behavior, Financial Success, Lustful Pleasure, and
Freedom/Release). On the other hand, Kama is portrayed as a distraction
who keeps people unhappy and unenlightened.

It is ironic that Valentine's Day (sacred to Cupid, who is so like Kama)
always occurs near MahaShivaRatri. (This year, MahaShivaRatri is
February 21st; Valentine's Day is always February 14th.) Lord Shiva and
Kama are sworn enemies.

It is said that when the goddess Parvati fell in love with Shiva, the
Gods sent Kama along with her to serve him. Kama shot Shiva with one of
his flower arrows, but Shiva was meditating, in a state of <samadhi>.
Sexually aroused from his meditation, Shiva opened his third eye and
incinerated Kama! From this, Kama gets some of his names, like Ananga
(the Body-less One). Shiva eventually relented and married Parvati. He
was also approached by the love-lorn Rati, who pleaded to have her
husband returned to a body. Eventually Kama was reincarnated as a son of
Krishna's.

In popular parlance in India, "Tantra" is used to mean magic, or
witchcraft. There are several different types of magic:

Shanti - cures disease, removes curses
Pushti - increases wealth, prestige
Akarshan - attracts things (money, people, opportunities)
Istambhan - petrifies; stops movement
Mohan - causes delusions, stupefies
Ucchatan - disturbs thoughts, distracts
Vashikaran - controls another's mind, makes a zombie
Vidveshan - causes animosity between two people
Maran - kills at a distance

Akarshan and Vashikaran are the two types of magic that are used in love
spells. Here are a few Hindu techniques to sweeten your lust-object's
feelings towards you.

Kama's bija (seed syllable) is <kling>. (It is also sacred to the Divine
Lover, Krishna.) The "K" sound invokes Kama as desire; the "L" sound
invokes Earth and Indra, Lord of Storms; the "I" sound invokes
satisfaction; and the nasal "M" brings both pleasure and pain. By
vibrating this bija, you can provoke lust within yourself, and possibly
in others.

We spoke a little about Gayatri mantras, invocations of deities. Here
are a couple of Kama Gayatri's:

Manobhavaya vidmahe
   (We envision the Mind-born One)
kandarpaya cha dhimahi
(We meditate on One Who Enflames)
tanno Kamah prachodayat
   (May Lust enlighten us)

Pushpadhanushya vidmahe
(We envision One with a Flowery Bow)
Lakshmiputraya dhimahi
(We meditate on the Son of the Wealthy Lady)
tanno Kamah prachodayat
   (May Lust enlighten us)

Chant one of these Gayatri's at least 11 times, and ask Kama to draw your
loved one to you.

A much shorter mantra is:

Om Hrim Mohini Swaha
(Om Hrim to the Enchantress I make offering)

Now, you have to chant this 10,000 times to give it power. After that,
chanting it a mere 108 times over a piece of fruit will make the fruit a
love charm. Anyone who eats the fruit will become infatuated with you.
Since the Deity is Mohini, Vishnu's disguise as a female to trick the
Asuras out of amrit, it is possible that this mantra may work better on
drag queens.

Perhaps you are tired of chants. Here's a Vashikaran spell:

Grind <gorachan> (a yellow dye made from a bull's spleen) with a fish's
liver in equal amounts. Apply this as a tilak (caste mark) on your
forehead. All will be infatuated with you. (At least, people will stop
you to ask, "What's that smell?")

Or another: the eyes of an owl should be mixed with <kasturi> (musk).
Put this on anybody, and he or she will become your friend. (Unless, of
course, it's a spotted owl, and the object of your affections is an
environmentalist.)

Good luck on your love search for Valentines Day!
