Samantha -- I think you are absolutely right here (because I've been in your
position myself) and that the seeming argument with the list is about timing
and temperament. As the saying goes, you cannot have a great faith without
first having a great doubt (was it Merton who said this?). At first it seems
like faith & reason need to be reconciled by renouncing one or the other.
Then a way opens to just hold both in a kind of loose grasp, keeping your
mind wide open and unknowing so that grace can emerge. What grows from the
resolution of opposites is greater than either one alone, but neither one
then becomes untrue.

I read science all the time. For awhile I didn't because my analytical
training is so strong the other stuff needed more space to break through. I,
too, was afraid of becoming ungrounded, though. I thought it was my
responsibility to put it all together and have it make sense so that I could
argue effectively against all challenges. What this really meant was I was
afraid to give up people's approval and, possibly, love. Letting go of all
of this (especially much of the need for approval) means I can enjoy the
interplay of faith and reason because I cannot, as a human being, possibly
ever know what the biggest picture is -- although I can get glimpses.
Sometimes I read stuff on the list that is too far out for me. Sometimes 6
months later I learn the far out stuff is true, although not in a way I
expected.

Lots of voices come at you on the spiritual path. Some need you to believe
as they do for personal reasons. But others are really saying stay in
yourself and honor your own path, it's the only one you've got. You strike
me as being wonderfully intelligent, honest and willing to look at yourself,
all the qualities necessary for coming fully alive as a human. Although you
have it, you don't need our approval! Love, Holly
