It is almost certain that Jesus Christ was not born
on December 25th.

For the first three centuries after his death Christ's birthday
was not celebrated by followers in December or any other month.

Various scholars, in the early centuries, speculated that he was
actually born on March 21 or 25, May 20 or 28, April 18 or 19.

Church leaders of the fourth century deliberately chose the
December 25 data to bring Christianity to a day when pagans
traditionally celebrated the birth of the sun.

It is even doubtful that Christ was born in a stable in Bethlehem.
More likely, he was born in Nazareth, the town where he spent his
youth.

This any of this really matter? It would, if the Christ story was
all about ritual, rites, or a fixed creed.

To see the real meaning of Christmas, you have to be far deeper
than the omnipresent seasonal music and feel-good movies that skim
the surface.

The truth is a story that breaks the barriers of logic.

The one we know as Jesus was, in every respect, a genuine living
man. His body and brain were those of a common Jew, born in
Palestine 2000 years ago.

He claimed to be the human image of the invisible God and said he
had conquered the world - not because he was a high priest, but
because he had faced and overcome all human weaknesses.

His life was outwardly one of the most troubled, yet his inner
life was tranquil.

He loudly proclaimed and proved that life itself was worth living.

The philosopher D.S.Cairns noted "we are all alike, wrapped up in
the great earth dream - yet he was fully awake to all the sons of
men."

Isaac Newton noted that Christ founded no church, created no
state, passed no law, established no government. His purpose was
to place the law of God in the hearts of the people, to make them
self governing.

No teacher ever showed more belief in the capacity of the ordinary
person to think rightly.

No matter never spoke as the did of peace, suffering, redemption
against all odds, and love.

The message has often become garbled, distorted and altered over
the years.

Mahatma Gandhi said that if Christ could be unchained from the
shackles of Christianity, he could become the way -- not just for
Christians, but for the whole world.

"I refuse to believe there exists a person who was not make use of
his example even though he or she may have done so without
realising it. The lives of all have, in some greater or lesser
degree, being changed by his presence," said the Indian Hindus sage.

Gandhi told Hindus their lives would be incomplete
unless they reverently studied - not worshiped - Jesus, because he was
an example, a metaphor for all.

This Christmas, the moon is eclipsed. The moon, the reflection of
the sun will be born anew from the dark of the night.

It is possible, by embracing the meaning behind both the ancient
and modern celebrations to realise that the miracle of this day,
December 25th 2000 is an opportunity for a remembering and
realising the rebirth of the living sun within each of us - the
realisation of the divinity of Hu-man.

After the cash registers have cooled down, and the tinsel and
materialism brigade have done their job, it is time to allow that
the consciousness that is the Christ is alive, living and breathing
in and through every man woman and child.

Within the acceptance in equality for all of this birthright can
the only true miracle of peace be found.

But first, before peace can be found within the world, it must be
found by and within the inherent divinity of the individual ..
to which each has equal inheritance.

No church, no state, no law, no established government or
organisation can do it.

The message that one person in full living realisation of the
integrity of the Sun can change the world
has already been shown to be a living possibility.

The outward reflection of the inner living light.
