There is one line I would add to this ..
 
Accepting "thine" own self - unconditionally ...
 
and until this is achieved within self 
nothing is empathy ..
 
we are like a sponge soaking up the vibrations of those 
around us .. and when we are not taking on everyone else's 
sh*t, we are reacting from our own inner wounds
 
so what most call empathy is, in fact sympathy.
 
Empathy is, in essence, the experience of the state 
of another
 
WITHOUT
 
any emotional response.
 
If you feel emotion in response to or in relationship with 
another, then this is a reaction .. and is not empathy.
 
True empathy comes only from non judgmental understanding 
of the heart ..
 
and this is not the love that is written of ...
 
Patenjali defines empathy in the Yoga Sutras when he talks about 
the state of consciousness where one has purified the self 
sufficiently to "be able to enter the body of another" .. to be able to 
"know" the experience of another ...
