About 30 years ago, I was a very young technician employed in a
sales and marketing position selling the very latest (at that time)
in electronic communication equipment.
I had an appointment with a very powerful man - the Managing
Director of a large multinational corporation - who had shown an
interest in the product. I was very nervous about the upcoming
interview.
My Sales Manager sensed what was going on, and called me into his
office.
"Christopher", he said .. "first thing in the morning when we are all
sitting with our pants down on the thunder box evacuating our
bowels, we are all very much equal .. and we are all getting rid of
what was not palatable to our bodies .. even the Great Ones. This
man you are seeing is, in essence, no different from you or I."
From that day on, I saw my Sales Manager in a different Light.
Later, in the interview, I reached a point where I was struggling
.. and suddenly a picture came in my imagination. I burst out
laughing.
The Great One asked me what I was laughing about .. so I told him
what my Sales Manager had told me .. and then what I saw.
There was a stunned silence in the room .. and the Great One's
disciples .. his technical assistants observed a very embarrassed
silence ..
finally broken by The Great One asking me for the contract so that
he could sign his acceptance.
"Yes", he said .. "underneath, where it really matters, we are all
very much human .. and equal. It is everything else, the position
we hold, the idea of who we are and who the other person is that
leads to our perception of vulnerability. In my own way, I am as
vulnerable as you are."
He continued .. "None are born Great .. some achieve Greatness
through the stint of hard work .. others have greatness thrust upon
them .. the ones I can't stand are those who grate on me"
Until he died, that man and I were the best of friends ..
