Hi Henry,

My experience has been different from yours. When I was about 19, glowing after a Zen retreat in India, I landed up at home to find my freinds were going mushroom hunting. I joined them and had the mushies. All I can say is that my life has never been the same since: And that was 20 years ago.
I experienced every sublime feeling I could imagine, heart-aching love for everything including the trees around me, the sky and the hills. All the stuff i had only read in Spirituality books were happening to me. Since then I have been trying out various kinds of mind-altering substances, all of which have been excellent, if not outright ecstatic.
And as for the Indian Guru and Ram Dass; I can only say, that i have lived in India all my life and seen many Gurus. There are those who use psychedelics and those who don't. Ganja is the principal offering to Lord Shiva.

With all due respect, I suggest you keep your judgements away for once, open your heart and mind, and smoke a fat joint. If you dont like what happens, you can always pick up where you left off !

Give 'Beauty' a chance.

What say?

Hi, o.k. I will add my two cents. I do not believe in drugs and I have a
mind set that the drugs are just a way for the mind to play. I have smoked
grass with some *hippie dudes* and it only gave me a headarch. Of course,
as I was a psychology major at the time, I had the mind set that there was
nothing to the grass and that it was only the power of suggestion of the
others in the group around me that makes it work. Of course, I knew that my
mind was more powerful that the punny minds of the hippie types and that no
way was their puny minds going to control or even touch my mind. So I
smoked their dope and rejected all their verbal *instructions* about what i
should feel and experience. So I experience nothing but a headarch.

If I stick my finger in my eye, I see stars. But this does not mean that
the stars are really there. Likewise, when people take drugs and see stars,
it does not mean that the stars are really there. I dismiss all the visions
that people have while on drugs as meaningless, much like dreams. On a
related note, dreams are better or more spiritual and drugs are not needed
to dream. And dreaming is a damm sight safer than taking drugs.
I went thru the drug culture of the 60's without taking drugs. I was in the
Air Force at the time. My mind set was and still is, only stupid people
take drugs. And that taking drugs makes a person stupid. Drugs are for
weak minds or small minds. See Ram Dass's book where he gives LSD to his
guru in India(twice) expecting to teach the Guru a thing or two about
Enlightenment the American Way. Point, the Guru takes the LSD AND NOTHING
HAPPENS AT ALL. Then Guru says, oh, that mediciene you gave me, we knew
about it thousands of years ago and we have long surpassed it, it is nothing
  at all.

Compared to the real Guru's from India, lsd and other drugs are nothing and
are not a tool on the spiritual path to Samadhi.

Americans may want to play with drugs, so o.k. drugs are a toy but that is
  all.

And yes, I have had two teachers who worked with K and My K is alive and
well. I am a mystic and have mystical vision----without taking drugs.

  Dear List,

To answer this poll myself, I experimented with LSD (twice) , Marijuana
(numerous times with friends recreationally) and Cocaine and mescaline (once
each). during the 60's/70's. Stopped smoking pot in the 70's sometime. My
first psychedelic "trip" occurred when my sister sent us a couple of pot
brownies. Little did we know that she had made them by simmering a kilo of
grass with a pound of butter, and then used this butter to make the batch of
brownies. Sent us flying, to say the least. <grin>

While these experiences helped me somewhat understand what was happening to
me when K hit, there was a time differential of approximately 25 years, so I
doubt there was much of a connection. But who knows. I'd love to hear from
those of us who are K active and never took any drugs at all.

My drug experience(s) *did* cause me to further explore metaphysical and or
religious questions at the time. I listened a lot to Alan Watts and
Krishnamurti on the radio. Both had wonderful voices! The interest waned
  over time, until K hit.

So far, 3 people have answered on list, and 11privately (9 yes and 2 no
  votes.) Thanks so much, everyone.

  Love, Hillary
