in addition to vitamin b-complex (b-12 being the most important for mental
functioning of bipolars,) you may wish to examine GABA, a neurotransmitter
amino-acid like substance one can purchase over the counter. GABA is the
most common neurotrasmitter in the brain, and functions primarily as an
inhibitor. It functions much like dapakote, which artificially increased
gaba levels in the brain. Also, for those stressed out or low energy times,
tyrosine works pretty well, as it is a norepinepherine precursor. Taurine
makes a nice, mellowing complement to gaba. All must be used cautiously, as
we have little data on potential side effects of these treatments. Almost
certainly, though, gaba is less destructive to the human brain than
depakote. I would start on only one at a time, for 6 weeks or so, to see
how you feel.
