  It sounds to me as if the person you quote is talking about what is
usually called kundalini, using a different vocabulary. Sanskrit
tradition has the biggest vocabulary about it, though the phenomenon
has of course occurred elsewhere than in people acquainted with Yogic
traditions and practices.
  I really recommend Bonnie Greenwell's book, ENERGIES OF
TRANSFORMATION--or--go to the search engine Google and do a search
for Bonnie Greenwell, there are several good articles by her posted
on the web, as well as her own website: http://www.kundaliniguide.com

   she is an American psychologist who knows these traditions and has
worked with huge numbers of people going through this. Virginia
