At the moment, I'm trying to meditate by just coming back to my breath and
feeling it's path, but I don't exactly know what to do with the breath. I've
also been reading a lot about the psychosis that can occur when the Kundalini
energy kicks in without guidance, so I'm nervous about that.

Thank you. And thank you for all the interesting posts.

Hi,
Glad you've enjoyed lurking. Based on what you've said, l'd recommend
that you do a vipassana or zen meditation retreat with someone in the NYC
area. TRICYCLE magazine ( perhaps SHAMBALA SUN also) would be a good thing to
pick up as a resource guide, as it contains listings for Buddhist centers all
over the country and there are many in your area. l make this recommendation
because it sounds like you have a Buddhist orientation and are grounded,
which is good.
There is no better place to start than basic
mindfulness practice. Doing a weekend retreat would give you a good
introduction to a teacher and other meditators and would give you both info
and contacts to help you proceed further, whether with that teacher of
another one. lf it were me, l'd also pursue hatha yoga classes or even
martial arts, because a focus on meditation alone can lead to neglect of the
physical aspect and insufficient preparation of the body for energy work.

l
think you're wise to be wary of kundalini. lf you are going to encounter it
at some point, it's best to do so after long and thorough preparation rather
than engaging in a full fledged pursuit of kundalini's power for reasons
tainted by ego. This can be disastrous. There's surely no lack of info and
"experts" offering guidance on the path. lf your intention is strong you'll
come across it all soon enough. An open heart and common sense are your best
guides. Good luck!
