Hello, dear folks--

I've read the list for all of three days now, and will dare to jump in
on this thread.

This can't be over-stressed. I'm a psychologist who has worked with
lots of "psychopaths," and most are non-violent people, trying to
survive amidst their own internal tortures. Most perpetrators of
violence aren't psychiatric patients.

As for "loving the enemy" in general: I recently became aware that in
other incarnations, I (this same soul) committed atrocities. The
process I went through with that revelation was similar to what Rob
wrote re his dream of a while back. I came to view all atrocity as an
attempt to escape fear--to live without fear--and as such to have the
same basis as the drive toward enlightenment. I also set about tracking
down the story of Angulimala, a serial killer who intended to make the
Buddha his 1000th victim, but experienced spiritual conversion instead,
and became a Buddhist saint. He had to endure some consequences of his
crimes, but had a consequence been capital punishment, he would not have
lived to accomplish the good that he did. There's a similar story about
another historical Buddhist figure--Milarepa. Whatever heinous things
anyone does, nothing ever destroys the sacredness of a soul--or the
possibility of that soul's enlightenment, in whatever present or future
incarnation.

As a rounder to the introduction, I'll add that I found the list via
El's website, and she was very helpful with a referral. I wish her all
the best. So far I like what I see of balance in these posts--yet
understand how things can get to tilting, now and then, way to one side
or the other (as happens, I think, on all lists, regardless of subject
matter). I look forward to more.

Best to all--

Debbie
