Hi, Karen,
Must remember to keep picking shocking topics (off-topic, as usual). :-)

snip> I dated a psychopath once; well, at least once, but this one guy was
a clear-cut case of a psychopath, with the criminal history (I found out
later) to prove it.

Sounds like you were fortunate, or quick-thinking.

Several months later I was in the library looking up a book; it wasn't
there, but another one caught my eye; it was on psychopaths (coincidence? I
think not).
>It was a very interesting and informative book. Most psychopaths aren't
actually murderers, but they do cause pain in the lives of everyone around
them, especially family and friends.

I found quite good urls on this:

>As for the death penalty, there have been too many cases (one would be too
many) where an innocent person was put to death and only after they were
dead were found to be innocent. I definitely want these people put where
they can't continue to hurt people, and I think life in prison accomplishes
that. I have a little less trouble with the death penalty for those who
obviously are guilty, but still it seems like we are playing God to kill
them. Two wrongs don't make a right. (stupid old cliche, I know)

I tend to agree. On a personal level I could excuse myself from the feeling
of having done what they have done, no matter what the reason. Not being
the executioner makes it easier to pass judgement, I think. The only
situation where I can excuse my killing someone is in self-defence in a
life-threatening situation. But this more an acknowledgement of my instinct
for survival than an indication of higher reasoning. :-) But don't think
that I haven't *thought* about it! :-)

>But for many people on death row, the case isn't so clear-cut; as long as
they are alive, if they are later found to be innocent, they can be
released. But if they are killed and found to be innocent, you can't take
that back. There are also issues of social justice involved, with people
of color getting the death penalty far more than white people who commit
the same crime; also poor people get it more because they can't afford an
expensive attorney and for some reason we have more trouble putting rich
people in prison than poor people. Okay, off my soapbox.

I agree with a lot of this. I have to admit that social inequalities tilt
the scales. Not as it ought to be, but as it is. I have been on the
receiving end of "white collar crime", and it messes up your life at least
as much as a mugging...

Anyway, as you say, summer is here, I reckon that's enough of this topic
from me, and the list is quiet, so I think I'll be going home soon to begin
my weekend. I'll catch up Monday...

>Have a nice summer day.
You too. The sun has finally come out here, and the Anglian skies have
their characteristic little fluffy clouds painted onto a fine blue. Must
get out of the office! :-)

Love,

Rob
