Dear List,

I thought you might find this of interest:

The word 'mantra' (Sanskrit) means 'man' means mana or concentration, and
'tra' means protection. Mantra is the process whereby superconsciousness is
preserved by controlling the oscillations of consciousness, and developing
concentration. The most famous mantra is 'Om" or "Aum'. In pranawa, the
first mantra however is not OM, or AUM, but Ong.

" Pranawa is a combination of the three sounds which arise from 'a', 'u', and
'm'. As long the 'a'. 'u', and 'm' form three seperate sounds, the yogi will
not reach the Shabdabrahman (kundalini as primordial sound) level. Each
sperate sound, does of course, produce results, but this does not lead to
Kundalini. When the three sounds become one sound, it is the pranawa-sound
as it is manifest in Ong. It is an extraordinarily grand sound, which
contains the germ of the summation of all fifty matrika-sounds." (p.109,
Layayoga, S.S. Goswami)

It is interesting to note that over 60 years ago, the self-styled bad-boy of
the occult, Aliester Crowley made the comment that OM, or AUM, should be
pronounced as "Aumng". The 'ng' sound is also strong in Tibetan chants, with
om, being more like 'ang' if I remember correctly.

This idea of a root sound, or word from which all other words is derived is
the essence of most esoteric incantations, as well as the Freemason's quest
for the so-called 'Lost Word" or "verbum" ("In principio erat verbum.." In
the beginning was the Word".) Note however, that the 'Word' is not a 'noun'
(thing) or adjective (quality) but a verb, or action. The first sound is an
active process, which only become lost when it become 'still' in the
formation of matter.

All of the Hermetic doctine and practice is concerned with words and "Words"
both written and spoken.

If our words as esotericists are to have power in the spiritual and material
worlds, then they must icnreasingly come to match the original word, or
'verbum'. What we say, as well as what we write, becomes our active 'verbum'
or creative will. It goes from the invisible to the visible. As we say, we
make so. Through increased use of sound, chanting, and positive speech in
our daily life, we can attune ourselves to the Inner Word, thining the
barrier between the visible and invisible so that one day we each can say:

"For we are the brethern of the Rosie Cross (illuminated ones)
We have the Mason (lost) Word and the Second Sight (clairvoyance),
things to come, we can foretell aright"

Words are interesting things.....

Sincerely,
