Well, ha ha, l'm not surprised someone asked this... it's a natural
question, as the first time l heard this statement from a zen gardner the
question registered with me too. l see it as a matter of perspective. The
zen
gardner is approaching and attempting to represent nature as an aesthetic
ideal in order to distill its essence. ln reality all of nature doesn't
always live up to this ideal, doesn't always represent this essence. Not
everyone would see it this way, but this is the gardner's perspective and
  purpose. Thanx for asking. jerry

Isn't this something like why God is supposed to have begun creating? To
make "more" out of Itself in order to know Itself? H. >>

YES .....er, well, l don't claim to know why God created, but
this statement resonates with me. lt speaks of the sacredness of the truly
creative act, which comes from a place that could be called *divine*. When we
create from the core, the heart of our being, in an authentic,
unself-conscious way, we create beauty, and in doing so l think we come into
closer contact with grace -- with whatever *God* is. l think that's part of
what the zen arts are about, and it's why altho l've never thought of myself
as a practitioner of zen, l've felt that l have a special connection with
that path.

The creative relationship l've had with my garden has vastly
deepened my overall relationship with nature as a whole. We're reminded of
such changes in ourselves in surprising ways. A couple years ago l went to
see the movie THE PARENT TRAP (the new one, not the Hayley Mills version). lt
began with a really nice nature scene in the woods (they were at a summer
camp), and upon seeing it l started sobbing, ha ha. My heart felt like it
would burst. Of course, k experiencers know how that feels. (LOL)
Fortunately, no one was sitting near me. :)))
