Dear List,

In alchemy there is an interesting text called "The Golden Chain of Homer"
which expreses the nature of Creation (or Nature if you wish) in ten levels,
similar to the Qabalistic Tree of Life, but using ten variations of the sign
for Venus, or the ahnk.

These permutations represent the movement of energy from the most subltle to
the most dense in an interrelated "chain of being."

One of the more interesting diagrams is that of two serpents intertwined so
that they form a circle, each eating the others tail. Hence, eternity is
shown within the primordial powers of the dual serpents (ida and pingala)
becoming 'one'. One serpent has wings or is 'volatile' the other wingless or
'fixed'.

The other diagram though relates to the idea of seasons in that it shows how
energy manifests from the invisible into the visible.

Here, a circle is bisected internally with an equal armed cross. This
circled cross is called "Hyle" or "Chaos" and is the unmanifest, but with the
potential of duality and the quaternary within it.

It 'splits' into two (2) circles, each bisected by a single line: called
"Niter" and "Salt".

The Niter possesses the vertical line, and the Salt the horizontal one.

>From Niter, the volatile, dynamic energies of life, we get Fire and Air; from
the Salt, we get the fixed energies of Water and Earth. Ideas common to most
esoteric schools.

Fire is at the head of the zodiac, or Aries, but is too powerful to be
approached directly, so we do so via the Element of Air. In most creatures,
this means resperation, hence the many exercises of pranayama.

In the seasons, this means spring. Where the energies of Fire (Aries) become
manifest in the life currents of the season via Air. As they grow stronger,
we enter into them more directly and reach the heat of summer (Fire), they
dissipate, and we enter into Fall (Water), and finally they are at their
lowest ebb, or Winter.

Is it no wonder that we can 'smell' life in the spring, as well as the
'barreness' or winter?

In practical alchemy one uses a 'magnet' or attracting instrument to catch
these sbutle forces during the Spring season, in the months of Taurus and
Gemini. This 'magnet' usually a fluid or powder that liquifies in the night
air, is used in preparing alchemical tincures. It is stated clearly that
this is the best time to 'catch' these powerful forces of life energy and
consciousness. It is also states that they may be strongest at about 4 1/2
to 5 feet off the ground, or at the level of the nose.

Classical yoga also says that 'prana' is best absorbed by facing east and
doing breathing exercises and meditations at sunrise. East is the 'direction'
associated with spring time and illumination in Western and some Eastern
schools. Obviously for practical more than 'symbolic' reasons.

The symbolism in the diagrams continue to demonstate how as these forces
reach their seasonal height (Summer Solstice) the opportunity for
illumination is increased, as they decrease this become more of a psychic
nature (Water=Fall). Thus it is no wonder that the time when the 'veil' is
thinnest (All Hallow's Eve) should be in the Fall of the year. Then, by
Winter, the energies of life are at their lowest, and certain levels of
awakening more difficult to obtain.

It is no wonder that the zodiac is also known as "Tali" or the 'Great Dragon'.

By studying classical astrology, or how the energies of consciousness act on
matter, we can better understand how to attune ourselves with the forces of
Nature - the Secret Fire - or Kundalini if you will.

Sincerely,

Mark Stavish, M.A.
