Dear List,

I thought some of you might appreciate this. It is from the late 15th or
very early 16th century, so please don't be too PC on the language.

From: Traite Causes Secondes by Trithemius, Abbot of Spanheim.

"God is an essential and hidden fire, which dwells in all things and chiefly
in man (humanity). From this fire everything is engendered. It engenders
them and will forever engender them; and what is engendered is the true
Divine Light, which exists from all Eternity. God is fire, but no fire can
burn, nno light can manifest itself in Nature without the presence of Air to
maintain the combustion; thus the Holy Spirit should act within us as a
Divine Air or Breath (Hebrew: ruach), causing a breath to spring from the
Divine Fire upon the interior fire of the heart so that the Light may appear,
for the light must be fed by fire, and this light is love, bliss, and joy in
the eternal divinity. This light is Jesus, who emanates for all eternity
from Jehovah (IHVH, Yod-Heh-Vau-Heh). Whoever does not possess this light
within him is plunged into a fire without Light; but if this light is within
him, then Christ is in him, is incarnate within him, and he will knowthe
Light as it exists in Nature."

Comments: Note similar use of breath, ruach to the word prana. Also, Light
without fire, or an imagination without life, is not desired. This light, or
imagination, must be vivified and it brings the emotional experiences
outlined.

Note on Jesus: In this period the idea of Jesus' name being spelled,
Yod-Heh-Shin-Vau-Heh, or Yodheshuah, was known in esoteric circles. The idea
of the Shin, or Divine Fire being in the center had a meaning beyond the
sectarian context. Each letter of the Hebrew name of God was attributed an
elemental quality (earth-air-fire-water) so here we see the idea of divine
fire being at the center of them all. Also, the idea that we become an
incarnation of this divine principle is clearly stated, as well as an
appreciation of the natural world which shares, to a lesser degree, this Holy
Fire.

Fire without light is a way of describing Hell, or spiritual ignorance.

Sincerely,

Mark Stavish, M.A.
